Some useful resources:

Adobe Labs - Adobe software currently in development available for free.  All they ask is feedback.  There are a number of really useful programs you can play with here including Adobe Lightroom (for photographers), Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta , Adobe Soundbooth , Adobe Flex , etc.  There are also a number of technologies that come in useful for developers like the Spry AJAX Framework. For OS X, Windows, and Linux.

Aptana - Aptana is a robust, JavaScript-focused IDE for building dynamic web applications. For OS X, Windows, and Linux. Did I mention it's free?

AppZapper - Delete programs easily from your Mac including all the extra hidden files. 

CSS Edit -  Makes creating style sheets easy.  I don't use this for development because I'm so used to hand coding them.  But for someone looking to step into CSS and figuring out how it works, this is a great program.

Color Schemer Studio -  Color Schemer Studio is a professional color matching application for anyone from hobbyists to advanced professionals.

DockDoctor - easily change the look of your dock in OS X Leopard. 

FreeNAS - Easily set up a RAIDed network storage server. 

IE 7 Standalone - Don't feel like upgrading to IE 7 yet but still need to test your sites in that browser?  Grab IE 7 Standalone from Tredosoft and have at it.

IE Developer Toolbar - Since IE does such strange things to CSS, this will help you track them down.

Install Multiple Versions of IE - Internet Explorer normally does not allow multiple versions to run concurrently.  This will ease your pain. Install IE versions from 3 - 6 after you've upgraded to IE 7.

MyMind -  MyMind is a combination of an outliner and a mind mapping application. Or a mind mapper with built-in outlining functionality. It's perfect for throwing together site maps in a jiffy. For OS X.

Open Office - a free (open-source), multiplatform, multi-language office suite.  Don't want to support Microsoft or don't have the money to purchase Microsoft Office? Give Open Office a try. For OS X, Windows, and Linux.

Remote Desktop Management (for Mac) - Control Windows computers with Remote Desktop Connection (free). Control Macs with Desktop Transporter ($30).

Smultron - Smultron is a text editor written in Cocoa for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later. Did I mention it's free?

Snapz Pro X - Easily record anything on your screen then save it as a screen shot or a QuickTime movie.

Time Tracker - Time Tracker is exactly what it says. Track time spent on projects, and individual tasks within each project. For OS X

Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox - If you're a web designer or developer, you need this toolbar.  It makes tracking down problems or seeing how someone did something a piece of cake.

WordPress - We use WordPress to power a number of blogs we've done for clients as well as full sites.  With WordPress's ability to have templates for pages it can act as a full CMS (Content Management System) for a site.  Because of the large developer community, there are also a lot of plugins that you can use on your site for free or very low cost.

WordPress Codex - If you develop for WordPress or even create templates, the WordPress Codex will help you get the most out of the software. 

Zamzar - We receive files we can't work with on a regular basis. My personal nightmare has been Microsoft Publisher. Absolutely nothing opens them… until now. Zamzar allows you to upload 5 files (or 100mb) at a time and they convert, then email you back the format you choose.
